Like the two previous illustrations, this one shows how the Union military advance—in this case, under General William Tecumseh Sherman—fostered emancipation, with (former) slaves streaming across Union lines. Thomas Nast, the illustrator, depicts several of the freed people prominently in the foreground, assisting tired or injured white Union soldiers.
