Akin to the cartoons of D. H. Strother, this carton by Ben Day takes the view that abolitionists are a source of fear, not freedom, for (young) black slaves. The slave mother invokes abolitionists, like she might have any dreaded figure of a child’s imagination, in order to scare her son into behaving properly.
