In advocating voting rights for black men, Nast used this cartoon to contrast former Confederates, such as Vice President Alexander Stephens, Congressman Robert Toombs, Admiral Raphael Semmes, Generals Robert E. Lee, Richard Ewell, and John Bell Hood, begging for pardons, with a black Union veteran, who had lost his leg in service to his country. Although Nast believed manhood suffrage was a natural birthright, he knew his national audience required the additional justification of national service and personal sacrifice.
